‘Maka’: reversing the gaze on Black Italian and migrant experience

|

Twenty years of experience in Italy as the first Black editor in the news industry: in this documentary, author and scholar Maka/Geneviève Makaping speaks about media representation of migrants, offering a poignant exploration of displacement, identity and belonging. The documentary is based on the book ‘Reversing the Gaze: What if the Other Were You?’ first published by Makaping in Italian in 2001 and considered the foundational texts of Black Italian studies, translated in English by Giovanna Bellesia Contuzzi and Victoria Offredi Poletto for Rutgers University Press (2023).

The screening is hosted by Dr Barbara Spadaro, Lecturer in Italian History and Culture at the University of Liverpool, and followed by a Q&A with the Moroccan-born Italian director Elia Moutamid and screenwiriter Simone Brioni (Stony Brook University). With the support of the Dante Alighieri Society and the University of Liverpool.
